How to Build a Fort

When I was a young child I used to go to my grandma’s house when my parents were going out. I loved going to my grandma’s because she always allowed my brother and I to pull off the couch cushions and build a fort. We would spend hours making the fort and playing inside. My grandma would even let us eat in the fort even though we were in the living room. I have very fond memories of doing this. While we pretty much made up the way to build our fort I actually have three different types of forts you can build. You can build a standard fort, chair fort and/or teepee fort. All forts will require some type of stable furniture to hold up and attach your material.

Let’s go through the steps it takes to build a standard fort.

  • Step 1: Choose where you want to build your fort, preferably between two pieces of furniture. I like using the couch and loveseat. Make sure they are close enough together to hold your blanket or sheet.
  • Step 2: Put down a blanket on the floor between the two pieces of furniture. This is your floor. Next construct the walls using the cushions from the couch and loveseat.
  • Step 3: Make a roof using a large sheet or blanket and drape it over the two pieces of furniture. If you have clothes pins, you can clip them to the four edges of your sheets or blankets and attach them to the material or a seam on your furniture.
  • Step 4: Reinforce the roof even more by adding heavy books along the top edges of the couch to hold it down.
  • Step 5: Add pillows and sleeping bags or blankets inside your fort to make it more comfortable.
  • Step 6: Bring in books, games, flashlights, snacks and any other toys you want to use in your fort.
  • Step 7: Don’t forget to defend your fort from unwanted visitors!
