We All Scream for Ice Cream

Words cannot describe how excited I am that summer is coming! Now I can enjoy my ice cream on hot days instead of shivering after swallowing a spoonful during the cold winter months. There are many flavours of ice cream to choose from. There are the classic flavours, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, which are always tasty. But you might want to try the new and unique flavours such as cotton candy, peanut butter, cookies ’n’ cream, and mint chocolate chip. In 1929, Rocky Road became the first available ice cream flavour other than chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry.

It was in 1945 that brother-in-laws Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins merged their ice cream parlours in Glendale, California to create Baskin-Robbins, the world’s largest chain of ice cream specialty stores. Baskin-Robbins has 31 flavours to choose from. That’s one for every day of the month! Since 1945, Baskin-Robbins has created over 1000 different flavours. That’s a lot of ice cream!

One of my favourites is soft serve ice cream. This soft serve formula was created by John Fremont McCullough and his son, Alex. They asked a friend of theirs, Sherb Noble, to offer it in his ice cream shop and within two hours, he had served more than 1,600 servings. Mr. Noble and Mr. McCullough opened the first Dairy Queen store in 1940 in Joilet, Illinois. Today, you can get soft serve vanilla, chocolate and even a twist of both. Noble and McCullough knew they had a hit on their hands and decided to allow others to open up franchises all around the world. The busiest store in the world is located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, can you believe it? I would agree, Canada, loves ice cream!!

Ice cream goes very well with other sweets too, like chocolate and caramel. Adding your own toppings can make a fun sundae! Not all ice cream flavours are around all year long, either, so this way you can make a special favourite you can have any time. Who knows what new exciting flavour you might come up with?
