Autumn and the Autumnal Equinox

Transitioning from the relaxing summer into the busy days of Autumn can get super hectic. Everyone is focused on returning to their regular schedules and preparing for back to school. Therefore, many do not realize that an equinox is approaching. In fact, most of us have no clue what an equinox is.

The earth undergoes two equinoxes every year. During this time, the sun’s position is directly on the equator which causes the length of day and night to be almost equal. This applies for everywhere around the world. Hence, the Latin name, ‘equinox’, which means ‘equal night’. The date of the equinox can vary from September 22nd to the 24th. This 2015 year, the September equinox falls on September 23rd at exactly 4:22am in Toronto, Canada.

The September Equinox is also often referred to the Autumnal equinox. For obvious reasons, this equinox leads us into the Fall Season. The second Equinox takes place sometime in March. This is often referred to the Vernal Equinox. The date of this equinox varies from March 19th to March 20th and accordingly, this year it is occurring on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at 12:31 AM. Alternatively, the Vernal Equinox leads us into the Spring season.

In all honesty, I only heard about this the other day. It sounded interesting so I decided to do some research. It’s definitely interesting how the world works. They always say you learn something new every day. Definitely looking toward the Vernal Equinox so, summer can soon approach again!
